A moldy cup of coffee was left in the common space, for so long that every time i went to use the washroom i gagged on the smell, the rooms were hot, loud and bright. the rooms were clean enough no bedbugs and the staff were nice enough. and the location was good for getting around downtown during the day but defenetly on the sketchy side. for the price this is not somewhere i would reccomend anyone stay.

If we had known beforehand that you can’t leave a one-star review on Hostelworld, we’d never have booked this place. The location itself could be decent – but honestly? With Vancouver’s fentanyl crisis, the streets around the hostel feel like a zombie movie. On our way up to the room, a guy was literally sitting on the stairs, about to shoot up. :( Our room? A joke. Stuck right under one staircase, above another, and directly off the hallway. No soundproofing whatsoever – it felt like sleeping on the street. To make it worse, the room had a glass window facing the hallway, where the light is on 24/7. Dark room? Forget it. Sleep? Impossible. The facilities are beyond poor. It looks like all the furniture was scavenged from a junkyard, and everything is filthy. Dirty pillowcases, grimy hallways, old and disgusting bathrooms. The staff? One lovely lady at least gave us some instant coffee (since there’s not even basic tea or coffee here). But the rest looked bored, annoyed, and totally unmotivated. Bottom line: Never again. Zero recommendation. Save your money, spend a little more on a real hotel – or honestly, just pitch a tent on the street. It’d be about the same as staying here.

Although a lot of the reviews are complaining about the mess in the rooms, it’s a hostel -and a decent stay! Bring your own disinfectant wipes and ask for extra sheets at the desk if you’re worried. It’s a good location and a ten minute Uber from the PNE. Sheets smelled fresh out of the washing machine and no signs of bedbugs! The first layer of mattress cover had a big crusty stain - probably a spill, but there were two- three layers of sheets on top, therefore it wasn’t an issue. Only two outlets, so if you’re staying with a friend make sure to take turns charging your phone while the fan is plugged in. Had a great sleep, other than the occasional noisy seagull. Bring ear plugs just in case! Overall, had a great experience and the front desk staff were lovely and accommodating.

For what it is, this hostel was everything I needed. A convenient, comfy bed in a central location, easily accessible from the airport and to shuttle buses. It's absolutely no frills, with shared toilets and showers but I only had to wait for a shower for about a minute, and my room had a basin, mirror and fan. The staff were friendly and helpful and I was able to leave my backpack after checkout for a few hours. The late check-in instructions were easy to follow as I arrived after reception had closed. It is near the Gastown neighbourhood which is suffering from the substance issues more than most of the city, but I didn't feel unsafe. There are plenty of bars and restaurants and breakfast locations close by that are at a good cost (see my other reviews). As others have mentioned, it is a creaky building, but it is over 100 years old and being from the UK I am very used to creaky floorboards. I will recommend here to friends looking for a no-frills-attached, affordable-for-Vancouver place to stay in the city.
